RIVERS STATE GOT NEW CHIEF JUDGE
Justice Ayayi Lamakara took the oath of office yesterday as the substantive chief judge of the state before the Governor Chief Barr. Ezenwo Nyeson Wike, in Government house in Portharcourt.
The Speaker of Rivers State Dabotorudima Adams announced and confirmed the appointment of Justice Ayeyi Lamakara as the Chief judge of the State.
However the only APC law maker Hon. Victoria Nyeche has reacted to the decision of the Rivers State House of Assembly. She said that the house does not have any legal backings to appoint the chief judge of the state because they are only Nine members out of the 32 members that made up the house .
Thourge she has not being swore in after the Appeal court declared her winner of the 2015 election in the place of Hon Jones Ogbanna of Portharcourt constituency 1.She disproved the act of the members and said the appointment will not stand as other members will not accept it.
The survived Nine member confirmed the appointment yesterday in agreement to the request of the Rivers State Governor to confirm the appointment of the acting Chief Judge to be the substantive Chief Judge of the State. The request was granted by the Nine members of the house.
Victoria Nyechi, a two time house member and most performing lawmaker as people rated her in her constituency said that the Nine man house member does not have the constitutional quorum to confirm the appointment of the chief judge of the state.
Reason being that the house of Assembly that is 32 members in number,Nine member can not confirm appointment of such critical post in the state.
However, Chris Itamunola, a lawyer and special Assistance to the governor said that Victoria does not have that right to question the activities of the house and he further said that the constitution is silents on the scenarios in Rivers State because such a situation has not risen before in the political sphere of Nigeria.
He further explained that since Victoria has not been swore in, her inputs is as nothing to the legislative activities of the state Assembly.
Chris said , the confirmation will be criticized by constitutional lawyers in the state.
The governor congratulated the courage of the legislator and pleads for their co operation for better governance and development of the state.
