| Hillary Clinton. U.S Presidential Candidate. |
With outspoken businessman Donald Trump waiting to be crowned as the right-wing Republican candidate for leader of the free world, the world’s eyes have turned to the centre-left Democratic party race. Although the race has not been declared over, Hillary Clinton has secured enough votes to win the election and is waiting for her rival, far-left Senator Bernie Sanders to concede defeat.
it is certainly going to be an exciting contest with Trump’s outlandish antics, but what do we know about the credentials of the Democrat candidate? From Chicago, America’s third largest city, Hilary trained as a lawyer before launching a career in Washington DC before moving meeting her husband, former president Bill Clinton who ruled from 1993 – 2001.
Hilary was first lady twice, first when her husband was governor of the southern state of Arkansas, then when he became president. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter clinton Hillary has attracted the support of minorities, women and progressives Hillary is considered to be the most active first lady in American history, actively campaigning on a range of issues including women’s rights, healthcare and welfare reform, and she stood by her husband when he was nearly impeached during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
Devoted yet determined to escape her husband’s shadow, Hillary stood as the Democratic candidate for Senator of New York in 2000 and won, setting another precedent as the first lady to secure an elected position in the US. She positioned herself on the centre-right of the Democrats while in office, supporting the War in Iraq (which she later said she regretted), but also speaking in opposition to tax cuts and supporting the 2008 banking bail out when the US faced economic disaster.
she campaigned to become the next president of the US, losing to eventual winner and charismatic speaker Barack Obama. This was not the end for Hilary however. Soon after he became president, Obama offered Hilary the position of secretary of state, the US’s foreign minister, one of the most crucial posts in the American political system. While secretary of state, Clinton sat by Obama’s side when Osama Bin Laden as taken out. She was also instrumental in resetting relations with Russia and trying to contain the Arab Spring and preserve American hegemony.
Obama replaced her with veteran politician John Kerry in 2012, allowing Hilliary to start building up her campaign to become president in 2016. Relying on a coalition of minorities including Black Americans, gays and woman, Hillary was always considered the presumptive Democrat nominee.
However, she had to weather the surprise rise of socialist Bernie Sanders who beat Hilliary in a number of key states but not securing enough votes to win the nomination. So, it is Trump versus Clinton for the White House, the two least popular candidates in decades. Nobody took Trump seriously when he announced his candidacy, but look what he’s achieved since.
What is certain is this is going to be the most outlandish and controversial campaign in US presidential history, and although Hillary is widely considered to be the likely winner, who knows what could happen. Who do you think will win the election? Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton?
